Urban poverty is an often ignored yet significant development challenge as Pakistani cities face growing squatter settlements and increasing rural to urban migration for economic opportunities and a better life. Unlike their rural counterparts, urban poor lack key safety nets such as land, family and social networks, or income generation etc during the transition phase that can sometimes last up to 3-7 years. While aggregate health indicators for family planning (FP), reproductive health (RH) and immunisation are better in urban than in rural populations, the urban poor do worse than the rural poor . To address this emerging need, RADS is working with NUST Community Service Program to start an Urban Initiative in squatter settlements in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
